S-Factor 6 – Enterprise and entrepreneurship education are evaluated through the Ofsted inspection framework.

Let’s not be naïve everyone…schools and colleges are accountable and focus on what they are inspected on – who can blame them?

In a culture of league tables, high stakes testing and exams it’s sometimes hard to prioritise what’s right above what will be measured.

Ofsted has identified the factors that get results in the classroom and they reflect the kind of approach we’ve been talking about which creates the environment and practice where young people are motivated, more engaged and, as a consequence, learn better.

Schools and colleges want to do what’s right for their students – offer a fantastic educational experience that prepares them for life. And it’s right that schools and colleges that do this should be recognised for their practice, and that their provision is highlighted through external evaluation reports. For other schools, making enterprise and entrepreneurship part of the Ofsted evaluation framework provides a powerful incentive to prioritise it.

So, if we’re really serious about creating a culture of enterprise in education it’s got to be part of the Ofsted evaluation framework.

What we’re suggesting schools and colleges do is achievable. We’ve shown that a town like Rotherham can become ‘The Most Enterprising Place in Britain’ by embracing enterprise in education.

Teachers and Head teachers involved in this campaign tell us enterprise improves the quality of teaching and learning, engages pupils and raises attainment and achievement. That’s the internal motivation to be involved – the external motivation is knowing that the organisation that evaluates educational performance thinks that this is important enough to inspect.

Inspiration

  • In Rotherham schools and colleges ‘enterprise’ is highlighted time and again as an outstanding feature by Ofsted inspectors.
  • In a report collated from 5 outstanding authority schools, enterprise was highlighted by Head Teachers as a powerful vehicle for learning, providing meaningful contexts which engaged pupils and raised attainment.
  • A report produced for the SSAT (now the Schools Network) highlighted how schools with Business and Enterprise specialisms have effectively harnessed enterprise and entrepreneurship as a vehicle to improve from being satisfactory or good to outstanding.
